Help! I bought a "lemon grass" plant at my local nursery (Zone8a)and it is very purple at the bottom of the plant and looks much like a weed; not the plant s on Google image. I asked the nursery what might be going on; too little of something- too much? I am currently getting ready to pot the plant and bring it in son for the winter. Any thoughts?

It is normal for lemongrass to have some purple color at the base. The link below is a publication on lemongrass from the University of Wisconsin. There are some very good photos showing the purple color of lemongrass in that publication. Just click on the link and a document should open. If your plant has more purple color than the ones in those photos or if the purple color is in the leaf (not at the base) , then you may have reason for concern. I have also included a link to another website that has a good photo of lemongrass with even more purple color.

I hope this helps. If you still have questions or need more information please let me know. You can also send photos to my email address if you still suspect that something is wrong with your plant. dekelso@ncsu.edu
