On Labor Day weekend I seeded a new 3000 Sq.Ft.lawn with mostly Blue Grass varieties. I now have a once mowed stand of turf however, I also have a substantial amount of chickweed growing. Since the chickweed will continue to grow under winter snow cover, when may I first apply a herbicide such as 2,4-D ?

Hello and Thanks for using the Ask an Expert System

I am attaching two links for information on applying broadleaf weed control to newly established lawns. Both provide some important insight into the use of herbicides.

The first is “Controlling Broadleaf Weeds in Newly Seeded Areas” from Perdue Extension. http://www.agry.purdue.edu/turf/tips/2011/03282011_PartIII_broadleafweeds.html

The second is “Broadleaf Control for Home Lawns” from Ohio State Extension. http://ohioline.osu.edu/agf-fact/0402.html

If you do decide to apply an herbicide please be sure to read and follow all the label directions.

In addition I am providing a link to a thorough and detailed source of information on all aspects of lawn care in Pennsylvania. Penn State Extension’s online web site on home lawns is at

If you have additional questions you can contact your local Penn State Extensions Office.
