Bark splitting is usually the result of environmental conditions caused by excessive moisture (flux) or sun exposure (scald) during the winter months,these cracks will usually appears on the southwest side of the trunk.Depending on the location of the crack , it is a place for insects or disease to entire into the crack resulting in decay to take place.
