Cedar rust on Hawthorn

Asked October 2, 2014, 10:47 AM EDT

Had apple-cedar rust diagnosed on previous Hawthorn; took seedling Hawthorn plant out and planted another in same spot. Is that ok? or should I plant in different hole? Didn't know if soil would need to be treated?

The spores of this rust are spread by wind, in a complicated scheme involving species other than hawthorn. Planting in the same spot isn't a terrible idea, but prepare to spray fungicides at the beginning of the next growing season.
