Infestation of Pachysandra - 40 year old ground cover under a medium size, large leaf maple tree. Had been trouble free. Exposure is afternoon sun, largely sheltered by large leaf maple tree. Suddenly developed white linear dots on pachysandra leaves, (see photo). "Infestation" has spread to stems of pachysandra plant and those pachysandra are dying. Tree had been thinned about 18 months ago to allow more sunlight to penetrate to ground. Actions to take?

Montgomery County Maryland pest control euonymus scale on pachysandra

Your pachysandra is infested with Euonymus Scale insects. Pachysandra is an alternate host for this insect. You should spray the plants now with horticultural oil. Be sure to read the label for instructions on diluting the oil when temperatures are high. You could then spray the plants again during the dormant season.with the undiluted horticultural oil.
The pachysandra is also under some level of stress as it adapts to the increased sunlight now available.
