I have a lot of hostas and would like to divide. Some are so big they are overtaking other plants near them. Is fall a good time for propogation? I am ready to divide now but have not done so. Would appreciate an master gardeners expertise in this area. Thank you.

It is easiest to divide hostas in the spring, before they've fully leafed out, just as they are beginning to emerge. It can be done now, but it is a bigger chore given the size of the plant. The biggest challenge in the spring is to remember which hostas are big and need dividing. I suggest either marking them in your garden or taking photos (or both). Here is a reference:
