Is it OK to eat volunteer tomatoes growing among Deadly Nightshade?

Asked September 15, 2014, 6:48 PM EDT

I have tomatoes that came up from last year and there are lots of them with beautiful tomatoes. I also have some deadly nightshade growing in that same area. Are they okay to eat? I have already eaten some and now I am worried. Also, do you have to wear protective clothing etc to remove the deadly nightshade?

An overview about the toxicity of deadly nightshade is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atropa_belladonna. Your volunteer tomatoes will be safe to eat even though the deadly nightshade is growing nearby.

For specifics, please phone Poison Control toll-free at 1-800-222-1222.

Bottom line about deadly nightshade: Don’t eat it.
