what has happened to my lilly of the valley? Seem to be all burnt. been...
Your lily of the valley is suffering from a foliar fungal disease known as anthracnose. It is not a fatal disease and affects only the foliage. This is a rather common disease, but it is exacerbated by dense foliage and cool, damp weather conditions such as we experienced this spring. As all fungal diseases, it cannot be cured once the symptoms appear, but it can be prevented by both cultural and chemical means. You could cut and remove the foliage this fall. You may consider thinning the plants to allow better air circulation, The disease may or may not reappear next year. But, you may consider spraying the emerging foliage next spring with a general purpose fungicide. This tactic will require rather frequent fungicide applications throughout the season in order to totally prevent reoccurrence of the disease.
