Can you identify this spider

Asked September 8, 2014, 9:42 PM EDT

A friend of mine who lives in Salem saw this spider today. It had built a web extending from a tree branch down to the ground. He said the spider was bright yellow with black markings on its back and had yellow legs. It was approximately 2 1/2 in diameter. We've looked all over and can't figure out what kind of spider it is. Thank you!

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately this photograph is too out of focus to determine the pattern on the spider. It is definitely not one of the species considered dangerous to humans (i.e., black widow or brown recluse). It is probably a member of the orbweaver family (Araneidae). There are numerous species in this family in the Carolinas and Georgia, some of which have the same general coloration as the spider in the photograph. If you have a sharper image, please send it to me at jim_burke@ncsu.edu and I'll try to determine a more specific identity.
