North Carolina is really a little too far north for avacados to grow outdoors commercially. That said, I know of several hobbyists who have grown avacados in greenhouses and unheated hoop houses. I have also kept one alive as a houseplant growing in front of a sunny sliding glass door. It never did fruit though. So, if you are doing it just for the sheer joy of it, you might want to try growing it in a protected environment. Avacado seeds root readily.
