identify this snake please

this snake was found by the river and seemed to be very aggressive, it was caught and then returned to the river unharmed

This is a common water snake. It is a non poisonous snake that can be very aggressive when disturbed. They can be found throughout Ohio and are frequently confused with the "cottonmouth" aka water moccasin which is not found in Ohio. When threatened, a water snake will flatten its body making itself look larger and more menacing.
