spraying weeds

Asked September 2, 2014, 3:30 PM EDT

I have a question about spraying 2-4 D near a small creek. I realize not spraying in the water, but what about the adjoining dirt.

The restrictions on labels vary and there are lots of brands of 2,4-D. If the label doesn't specifically prohibit spraying near water you should be OK spraying weeds adjacent to creeks as long as the spray doesn't go directly in the water. Some amine formulations of 2,4-D are registered for controlling weeds in water. Amine formulations are generally safer to aquatic organisms than esters, so I would recommend going that route.
