Alpaca Meat Inspection for resale

Asked August 30, 2014, 5:11 PM EDT

I have been hearing more and more in the alpaca community about culling our less valuable stock in order to keep our USA herd the best it can be. With that said what are the steps to be taken in order to sell cuts of alpaca meat?

In order to sell meat, all livestock must be harvested in a federal (UsDA) or state (not an option in PA) inspected facility. The product may then be made into wholesale and/or retail cuts of meat for sale. The retail sale may or may not occur under inspection through an exemption, however the individual/s selling the product must have a retail license through a state (PA dept. Of AG) or local agency. The retail must be inspected for sanitary purposes at a frequency outlined by that agency.
