The leaves of our maple tree are dropping off in great numbers and they are covered with brown speckled spots. What do we need to do?

Your maple tree leaves are infected with a common fungal disease known as tar spot. While the black spots look serious and leaves prematurely fall from the tree, rest assured that this disease does not impact the overall tree health. Consequently, no pesticide applications are recommended. Raking and destroying the leaves in fall is the most effective management technique.
