Creeping Charlie has taken over 1/2 of our small backyard [I didn't know what it was in the Spring so didn't attack it then :( ] What is the best approach for me to take at this stage of things? Is there anything I can overseed with that'll effectively compete with it next year (and my hand removing what I see appearing in the Spring)?

You can control the ground ivy weed with a broadleaf weed control containing triclopyr or a combination herbicide labeled for ground ivy. It is possible you may need several applications. Follow all label directions and see specific directions for reseeding.

Depending upon your site you can overseed with a turf type tall fescue grass seed for full sun to part shade areas up until mid October. For shady areas you can sow a fine fescue.
If you have not had your soil tested within the last several years you should begin with this. Results give pH, liming, and fertilization recommendations. See our link https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/soils/soil-testing
