Scarlett runner beans setting blossoms but no beans

Asked August 17, 2014, 5:21 PM EDT

Thanks for any help you can offer. My runner beans have been blossoming beautifully for a month but no beans! They have a spacious fence to climb and are 10 plus feet. Everything else in the same plot (Chinese cabbage, mizuna, rutabaga, carrots, sun flowers, etc) is doing just fine. Any suggestions?

Generally there are two things that can impact pole bean production. The first is high temperatures. If daytime high temperatures are consistently in the 90's and lows in the 70's it can lead to a light set. Beans generally produce better in late spring and early summer or in fall when the high temps are topping out in the low 80's. The other thing that can impact production is inconsistent soil moisture. Alternating wet-dry soil can also be hard on beans, especially if days are hot.
