what is causing the skin problem on my cucumbers (see pictures)? They are trellised, so no ground contact. Cukes have been very prolific this year. ~August 1 these skin problems started showing up. Pic is of the worst so far. Pic is of ~3" of 6" long, 1.5" dia young cuke. problem goes about 3/4 down one side. Skin deep only. A few leaves in full sun have similar looking (?) problems (see pic). Topside of shadier leaves also started showing some powdery mildew ~Aug 1. No surprise there No stem borers or potato bugs. Well watered, good soil. sun from full to 3/4. No cukes or squash in same location for 2 years. Probably overcrowded. Generally organic; we use milorgonite as a deer repellant so lots of N available as top dressing

The photo of the cucumber leaf does not look bad. We cannot say for sure whether the skin of the cucumber is physical and/or possible insect damage. You mentioned that the cucumbers are trellised. Have the cucumbers rubbed against something?
The cucumber beetle can gouge and rasp fruit. Look for the insects. See our profile on cucumbers http://extension.umd.edu/learn/vegetable-profiles-cucumbers as well as the cucumber beetle for monitoring, prevention, and control http://extension.umd.edu/growit/insects/cucumber-beetles-spotted-or-striped
