Hi, How should I prune these one year old crape myrtle plants to expose the bark? I don't think this is the proper time of year, but just want to know how when the time comes. They look like shrubs, but I think they are trees, Red Rockets. Thank you. Barbara

At this stage, you should identify the main stem stems you want to keep and remove approximately 20% of the lower limbs. As growth progresses, continue removing lower limbs exposing more of the stems. Google images has several examples showing the desired shape, early spring would be the prefered time of year to prune crepe myrtle.
