Help! My compost pile has fruit flies!

Asked August 1, 2014, 5:24 PM EDT

I have a very small compost pile that I hope will be ready to use by sometime next year. When I went to add some vegetative matter today I found it is completely infested with fruit flies. Is this a problem? If so, how do I rectify it?

Even though flies are normal residents of an active compost pile, it’s certainly annoying when they fly up in your face. Fortunately, you can minimize their numbers quite easily. Either bury fresh food scraps at least 8 inches deep in the pile or have a pile of “browns” at hand to cover fresh additions several inches thick. Browns include straw as well as either dried leaves or grass clippings.
