I need to reestablish a lawn in my front yard after it was torn up for extensive plumbing repairs. What varieties of seed do you recommend for this area? Do you recommend scattering straw on top of the seed to protect it/ hold moisture? I want something that will hold up to traffic and kid's playing, rather than striving for a green carpet. I know fall is a good time for seeding a lawn, but I'd like to do something right away to keep soil from washing away when it rains. Thank you.

Your timing is right on,you should have good results doing it at this time of year. Any turf type tall fescue blend will be quick to establish, incorporate lime and a starter fertilizer before final grading. Mulching with straw will help retain enough moisture to stimulate germination.
