Advice please on how to get the occupants of a very active wasp, hornet or yellow jacket nest to leave - permanently! It is about 8" x 6" with multiple entry & exit holes & hanging about 6' up from a pne tree in the small suburban backyard of my dog sitter so the yard is in constant use with neighbors' homes close by. Thanks. Caroline Turner

From your description we cannot say for sure what insect type is in the tree. If this is in an area where the insects are not a threat to you, leave the nest alone. They are beneficial because they feed on many pest insects. The queen will overwinter elsewhere next year and the workers will die out with a hard frost.

If you have to control, look for a wasp and bee aerosol. Look for the entrance hole or holes during the day. Control should be done in the evening when all are in the nest. Direct a stream of insecticide into the entrance hole and follow all label directions. If they emerge, stop and continue control the next evening. If you do not want to control yourself, please contact a pest control company.
