maple tree

Asked July 25, 2014, 11:24 AM EDT

I have a large maple tree in my back yard in Bear that the leaves are turning brown and it appears to be dying. Any suggestions on possible cause or remedy to try to save it?

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Delaware Cooperative Extension. You may receive a short survey after the answer to this question.
Without seeing your tree or a sample from it, it is difficult to tell for sure. If it is a Japanese maple, they were hard hit by this past winter with cold and wind. They are relatively weak trees, and are also susceptible to opportunistic fungi that come in on wounds or on stressed trees. Canker can take out one large branch or lead, while the rest of the tree is okay. I would recommend having an arborist (certified tree professional) come out and trim your tree with the thought of saving it.

My best,
Nancy
