How can I eliminate fire ants from my property?

Asked July 24, 2014, 1:48 PM EDT

I have an acre of land, and it is infested with fire ants. When I try to get rid of them, they just leave a treated mound and make a new one. Many birds, toads, rabbits, lizards, and snakes also live on the land. I want to eliminate the fire ants without endangering other wildlife. What should I do?

You may want to broadcast a fire ant bait over the entire property. The bait will be picked up by the fire ants as food, taken back to the colony, and shared with the other ants. Make sure to use the proper amount of bait--most fire ant baits are broadcast at a rate of 1-1.5 pounds per acre. Also, you will need to use a handheld spreader, set on the lowest setting.
