How do I plant grass seed?

Asked July 23, 2014, 6:48 PM EDT

When putting down grass seed, do I just rake the area and put down the seed? Or do I also need to cover the seed with dirt?

You will need to have seed/soil contact, so you should put the seed on bare soil and then rake it in lightly. The best time to seed a lawn in our area is from mid August through early September. For more information, see the Colorado State University Extension fact sheet Renovating the Home Lawn, which covers starting a lawn from seed.
