I'm trying to find out what is growing on our trees in Laytonsville. Several trees have this. The green things have now turned brown.

Montgomery County Maryland trees and shrubs leaf galls

These are beech erineum mite galls. They are harmless to the tree. Many trees will host insects such as mites and tiny wasps that lay their eggs on the leaf surface or in the bud before the leaf unfurls. There are many types of behavior as well. Sometimes the insects do not hatch until the leaf falls to the ground in the autumn. Other species will hatch and drop from the tree, etc.
