Mystery plant

Asked July 16, 2014, 5:32 PM EDT

Hi, I was just wondering if you knew the name of this plant growing in my backyard. It just started growing this year and as of now is probably 6 1/2 to 7 feet tall. The top portion has little yellow flowers that seem to bloom in clumps. Thank you!

That plant looks like common mullien. It is a common weed across most of the US that was imported from Europe. It is considered an invasive weed in some states, a nuisance in others and some herbalists taut its medicinal use. Like all natural remedies, it can have adverse effects and not mix well with other medications, natural and man-made. Like most plants, if it is growing where you don't want it it is a weed. Most of the time we don't want it.

Oregon State has an information sheet on Mullien.
