bulbous bluegrass

Asked July 9, 2014, 7:28 AM EDT

have cut a lot of this grass this spring in the hayfield and it covers huge areas. It is just starting to change color and is kind of green / gold. is there any winter nutritional value for cattle in this grass.

This plant declines in quality rapidly as it matures. Cattle will consume it when still green before the seed head comes up.
The best defense against bulbous bluegrass is a vigorous stand of perennial species fostered by good management of grazing.
This year appeared to be an exceptional year for this species as it was very prevalent probably because of the rainfall pattern and a lot of the native grasses had a weaker stand because of last years drought.
