How does a homeowner treat my ash tree to prevent the beetle from destroying the tree?

Insecticides can be applied to the soil under ash trees or injected by professionals into the trunk to protect a vulnerable ash tree from attack by the emerald ash borer. Large trees greater than 20 inches in diameter require treatment by a professional. Trees smaller than 20 inches can be treated by the homeowner, though D-I-Y treatment becomes less effective the larger the tree.
