Insecticides can be applied to the soil under ash trees or injected by professionals into the trunk to protect a vulnerable ash tree from attack by the emerald ash borer. Large trees greater than 20 inches in diameter require treatment by a professional. Trees smaller than 20 inches can be treated by the homeowner, though D-I-Y treatment becomes less effective the larger the tree.
