We have 5 apple trees which produced apples last year but we do not have any apples showing up this year.

What is happening is perfectly normal. Apple trees produce heavily one year and bear very little fruit the next. There are ways to try to control this by removing apples but it is very labor intensive. You will have bumper crops again next year.
