What kind of Grapes?

Asked June 16, 2014, 12:28 PM EDT

We recently moved in to a home with a vineyard in the backyard. There was no information to go with it. How do we determine what kind of grapes we have? Thank you.

Determining grape varieties can be tricky. There are a few places that can do a genetic test (http://fpms.ucdavis.edu/IDTesting.html) for a fee.

If that is too expensive, I recommend taking photos of the leaves and of the fruit as you go through the ripening process, and send them to a UC viticulturist: http://eviticulture.org/states/california/

On a side note, you have a major epidemic of grapevine powdery mildew (at least, on the vines that you have pictures of), which will likely result in loss of fruit for this year (management options would have had to go in place in the spring, when shoots were around 10" in height).
