Voles have made holes in my lawn. What can I do to get rid of them! Thank you for helping me!

First, are you sure you have voles? When voles tunnel, they usually leave open tunnel entrances about an inch in diameter. South Dakota also has eastern moles, which are not to be confused with voles since management is completely different.

Assuming you do have voles and are seeing open holes, there are a couple things you can do.

The most environmentally friendly way to eliminate them is to use a number of common mouse traps baited with moistened oatmeal or dried fruit. Traps should be placed at tunnel entrances and covered with something (cut up milk cartons work well) so that voles have access to the traps but birds can't see the bait. Be sure the trap jaws can clear the cover. There are good images included in the links listed below.

Another option is to use rodenticides. You will have to check with your South Dakota Extension Service to see if there are any products registered for home use in your state.

If you can use rodenticides in your state, be sure to follow all label directions to minimize danger to yourself, pets and wildlife.
