We found a number of these tiny critters, little less than 1/4" crawling about on the cardoon we are growing. It had this black glob of something on its back that it was able to lift up and down. see image. I was looking on page 189 of Whitney Cranshaw and saw something similar but coloring was different. It mentioned how it carried fecal matter and other debris around on its back, kind of like this critter was doing. You identified #187602 question that I sent as a tortoise beetle, that did indeed look like figure A and B on this page. Could this be a different stage of it? It was not found in the same location. Thank you

The insect in the photo looks like the larval stage of the tortoise beetle.
