poison ivy, oak

I know a good way to safely remove one or two poison invy plants , but I have large patches of it growing in pine woody areas of my yard, and a tree that seems to be completely taken over. What procedures, or what expert services to take care of this do you recommend? I have heard that simply using strong weed killer will kill it but the poison oil will remain in the dead plant and on the resulting debris and dirt for a long time.
