Crepe Myrtle dead but suckers at bottom thriving

Asked June 5, 2014, 9:14 AM EDT

When and how much do I prune/cut back the dead tree? How/when do I train the suckers for a new tree?

Hi, cut out all the dead parts close to the ground. If you want to save the tree, pick out the three best shoots or wait a year or two and pick out the best three and cut the rest of the suckers off. Then you can prune the three that are left to whatever form you want. There are times based on the shape or overall health of the tree that it might be best to replace it.Regards
