Repair of a Linden tree struck by a mower.

Asked June 2, 2014, 11:35 PM EDT

My 10 yr old Redmond Linden tree was struck by a riding mower. It stripped a lot of bark loose, plus put a gouge in the tree. Can this tree be saved? The bark was loosened about 18 inches vertically, and almost 40% of the circumference.

Hello,

What an unfortunate accident! This is a very serious injury to your tree. All you can do is trim any shaggy pieces and try "clean" the wound with clean cuts (do not cut into the tree more or cause additional injury). Do not use any paint or other sealants on the tree.

Keep the tree watered throughout the entire year (including fall and winter) and hopefully it will seal over the wound. The bark will not grow over the wound. Additional fertilizer is not necessary.
