What do you know about the African Okra and how it got to the Caribbean? I had an interesting story from a very old lady in the West Indies.

Hello and thanks for using the Ask an Expert System.

I am afraid I know nothing about how Okra got to the Caribbean. The only extension publication I could find on the history of Okra is from Texas A&M. Okra, or Gumbo from Africa is a short report on the history of okra. You can find it at http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/archives/parsons/publications/vegetabletravelers/okra.html

If you would like to share your story, I recommend that you contact the Montgomery County Penn State Master Gardener’s hotline. You can speak to a Master Gardener there. You will find information on the hotline at. http://extension.psu.edu/plants/master-gardener/counties/montgomery/hotline
