When is the best time to plant irises?

When is the best time to plant irises? I have one in a pot it has flowered. When is the best time to separate and replant?

If this is a winter-hardy iris you can plant it now. The best time to divide irises is in late summer, after they have bloomed and just as the foliage starts to die back. It is important to allow iris leaves to stay on the plant until they begin to die because this is how the rhizome obtains the energy for next season's growth.
