I have a 3 year old serviceberry tree with a small slit on its trunk. Dark streaks stain the trunk from the slit down to the ground. The slit is not new. It's been there for the last 2 summers, but I was told not to worry about it and that it's a normal feature of trees. It appears to be getting worse. Take a look at the images. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Your tree has Bacterial Wetwood or Slime Flux. This often alarms homeowners but it does little damage to the tree. More information can be found at this website. http://extension.psu.edu/pests/plant-diseases/all-fact-sheets/wetwood-or-slime-flux
