How do I get rid of carpenter bees in my cedar siding?
Thank you for your note to eXtension. Unfortunately, carpenter bees are being a tremendous problem throughout the Midwest this year. And even more unfortunately, there's not much we can do about them.
I'd suggest downloading Purdue's publication on this insect: http://extension.entm.purdue.edu/publications/E-252.pdf . It does list some suggestions, but they are going to be fairly risky (spraying insecticide on all exposed wood surfaces) or ineffective. For example, I spent last weekend applying varnish to my wife's wooden swing, and it hasn't slowed them carpenter bees down a bit. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
