Can our tree survive heavy deer damage?

Asked May 26, 2014, 1:02 PM EDT

Our young greenspire linden was heavily damaged by deer rub last fall. We used tree wrap, and it lived through the winter and has leafed out fully. However, the bark appears to be interrupted all around the circumference of the trunk, which is about three inches in diameter. We have not rewrapped or otherwise touched the tree. We are due soon for deep-root feeding from our arborist. Should we rewrap the tree or do anything else to help it recover from the damage?

If the deer rubbed the bark around the entire trunk, the tree will die this summer. For more information, see the University of Idaho Extension publication Tree Injury From Deer Antler Rubbing.
