Hello-- It appears that my Butterfly Bush is dead, has not sprouted. I was just wondering if you have heard reports of this throughout Maryland given the nasty winter we had. It also appears that my Crepe Myrtles may be dead as well, they have not leafed out yet but are usually last to do so. Crossing my fingers!

Carroll County Maryland shrubs crape myrtles butterfly bush winter damage

There have been numerous reports of butterfly bush and crape myrtle dieback this spring. Many other species were also affected by the severe cold weather we experienced. If you have not yet seen emerging growth, the plants are probably dead. You could give them the thumbnail test to confirm. Scrape a small bit of bark off some of the branches. If the tissue beneath is green, there is hope. If it is brown, that portion of the shrub is dead.
