I have several Euonymus bushes in the front of the house facing west so they get sun in the afternoon. They each have some black leaves. They have been there for about five years and are close to the front wall of the house. Some Knock-out rose bushes are growing in front of them. I also have one bush out back next to the house in the shade but it does not seem to have any black leaves,.

Charles County Maryland shrubs winter damage aucuba

The shrub in the photo looks like an aucuba and is showing winter damage. In general, aucubas grow best in the shade. The leaves develop a sick green in winter if sited in full sun and in windy locations. Prune affected foliage.
