How to keep deer from eating corn

Westmoreland County Pennsylvania

Unfortunately, there really is not economical or practical method of preventing deer from eating corn. If you have a small area to protect, you could use either electric fencing or 8' plastic mesh fencing. Reducing local population through hunting or out of season permits is also a recommended strategy. In both cases, you should focus on hunting does. Removing bucks will have no impact on reducing populations because deer have a polygymous breeding system where a relatively few amount of bucks can mate with most of the does in a population. Colleagues of mine recently published a new resource for how to construct a deer mesh fence at https://mdc.itap.purdue.edu/item.asp?Item_Number=FNR-486-W#.U3Zul9Hji70. It is geared towards tree plantings, but the process is the same regardless of what you are protecting.
