some of my mint has some black sooty stuff on it. I pulled up the plants with it but left the others. I put the pulled plants in our plant trash. What should I be doing and how do I find out what the black stuff is and if it has spread to my other mint plants.

Please submit a digital photo of the mint and the sooty mild on the plant. In general, when sucking insects such as aphids feed, they excrete a honeydew which fosters the growth of a sooty mold. Perhaps this is what you are noticing.
