Hello, Jim,

Thank you for contacting Delaware Cooperative Extension. Without seeing a sample and checking for pathogens and pests, it is difficult to say for sure. However, we have seen quite a bit of winter injury this season, from fluctuating cold temperatures and wind. Many magnolia trees and other broad-leaved evergreens have leaves that are affected. Those leaves will drop, but the tree should begin to put out new growth and by next year should look better. I would not trim the tree, but monitor it over this season, and water if we have periods of drought this summer.

My best,
Nancy
