Can you identify this plant and tell me whether it is invasive?

Asked May 9, 2014, 10:07 AM EDT

Every year this vine-like plant grows extensively up the lattice under our deck. It produces vibrant bluish purple flowers that my wife likes. I can't stand the plant and think it is something invasive. Could you please let me know what this plant is and whether it is invasive?

In your photo we see what looks like bindweed. As with all vines, you want to cut it where it comes out of the ground and paint the cut surface with glyphosate (Roundup) as soon as you make the cut. As soon as you see baby leaves, paint them with glyphosate. Persistence is the key to elimination. Do not spray since tomatoes are very sensitive to glyphosate.

Thank you!
