Ear mites are awful. I don’t even want to think what the poor animal is going through with ear mites crawling around in the ear canal and being unable to do a thing about it. Because we love our animals, we cannot tolerate their suffering like that. Ear mite infestation necessitates a visit to the veterinarian. The vet will not only treat to eliminate the ear mites, but will also check to see if the mites have caused secondary infection, and treat that as well. You can imagine that the mites cause tissue damage that then opens the area up for bacterial infection (which can produce deafness, if not treated). Ear mites are easily transmitted from one animal to another (as you noted, both cats and dogs get them), so I encourage you to check your other animals and have them examined by the vet, as well. Those of us who are pet owners have a responsibility to do for them what they cannot do for themselves.
