Ectopic pregnancy in the cow is normally extra-uterine with attachment to viscera in the abdominal cavity. Embryonic and fetal deaths normally occur early to 3 months of the pregnancy. The dead embryo or fetus is retained in the abdominal cavity and not expelled to outside, like an abortion from the uterus. Diagnosis by rectal palpation is limited to the location in the abdominal cavity, which possibly can not be reached by hand. If reached by hand, the risk of death is not increased.
