Pileated red-breasted woodpecker?

Asked May 6, 2014, 1:22 AM EDT

I saw a pair of them working on my power pole at around 2pm, 5/05/14 in SE Sioux Falls.
Had the lighter body color of rose breasted, but they were BOTH definitely pileated. A robin and a half in size. Long, straight beaks.
I'm a bit confused about what they were.

It is difficult to tell without a picture. There can be a great deal of color variation within a species. Cornell University's bird identification guide can be most helpful. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Pileated_Woodpecker
