West Texas Native grasses

Asked May 4, 2014, 12:04 AM EDT

Hey i am thinking about buying some cattle and having them on my place in the Sonora/Ozona areas (Sutton/Crockett Counties). What kind of grasses and weeds do well in the area? What are native to this West Texas region? Dandelions, rye grass, etc.??? Mainly thinking about what will the land provide as forage for the cows before i amend anything. Thanks for any help you can give.

On years when seeding is viable, we typically recommend a mix such as the West Texas Mix. It contains sideoats grama, green sprangletop, buffalo grass, Wilmon lovegrass, and some of the old world bluestems. The first 3 are native, but the others do well. The most suitable time to seed is in late winter/early spring (prior to spring rains). This year would have resulted in wasted effort as we have not had significant rainfall since last fall.
